Introduction: A Safety Net When It Matters Most

Medical crises can strike unexpectedly — a heart attack, major surgery, cancer treatment, or a serious accident can overwhelm any family. For Assamese citizens earning under ₹5 lakh annually, such emergencies can quickly turn into financial disasters.

Enter the Assam Arogya Nidhi Scheme (AAN). Initiated by Assam’s Health & Family Welfare Department, this program provides financial assistance up to ₹3 lakh for costly treatments and accident-related cases. It's designed to protect families, so health doesn’t lead to debt.

    Who Can Benefit?

    • Permanent residents of Assam

    • Families earning less than ₹5 lakh per year

    • Citizens of any age – young, old, and everyone in-between

    • Excludes government employees and pensioners.

    What Treatments Are Covered?

    Eligible cases include:

    • Serious illnesses: Heart disease & surgery (pacemaker, angioplasty), Cancer treatments, Kidney/liver issues (dialysis, transplant), Orthopaedic surgeries, Thalassemia, Bone marrow transplant, AIDS, and mental health conditions requiring surgery

    • Accident-related injuries: Road, rail, farm, industrial, rail mishaps, bomb blasts, etc.

    • Essential diagnostics & medications: Ultrasounds, CT/MRI scans, angiography, immunosuppressants, plasma/blood products, TB drugs, and more

    How Much Financial Support?

    • Up to ₹2 lakh: Approved by Committee Chairperson

    • ₹2 lakh – ₹3 lakh: Requires State-level Committee approval

    • Advanced approval possible for hospital payments up to ₹3 lakh

    Where Can You Get Treatment?

    Benefits apply to:

    • Government hospitals (including medical colleges)

    • Reputed private hospitals registered under Clinical Establishment Act

    • State-approved / empaneled hospitals

    • PM-JAY / Atal Amrit Abhiyan network facilities

How to Apply in 5 Steps

    1. Download the application from National Health Mission Assam’s website

    2. Collect documents:

      • Passport photo (doctor-attested)

      • Income certificate (by Revenue Officer)

      • ID and address proof

      • Hospital bills, prescriptions, discharge summary

      • Bank passbook copy

      • PM-JAY / AAA card if applicable

    3. Submit to NHM Assam: either via district Joint Director Health Services or Mission Director’s office in Guwahati

    4. Verification: A panel of specialists from Gauhati Medical College reviews applications

    5. Fund transfer: Approved payments made directly to your bank or hospital; advance payments allowed up to ₹3 lakh

    Scheme Highlights

    • Covers exceptional and life-threatening cases when regular insurance or AAA coverage isn’t enough

    • Joint funding: State government funds 50% while the Centre supports the rest

    • No age limit adds flexibility to help everyone—from infants to seniors

Conclusion: AAN—A Real Lifesaver for Assamese Families

The Assam Arogya Nidhi Scheme stands out as more than just another government program. It's a lifesaver—putting a cap on medical debt, providing dignity during treatment, and allowing families to breathe easier during health emergencies.

If you or someone close to you faces a major health scare and your family earns under ₹5 lakh a year, don’t hesitate. Download the AAN form today, apply with all required documents, and let this safety net do its job.
